GURU NANAK FOOD BANK

The number 13 has a significance meaning in Sikh philosophy, In Punjabi its pronounced “TERA” which sounds the same as “YOURS”. Everything 13, therefore, translates to “EVERYTHING IS GOD” As a young man working in a shop Guru Nanak Devji distributed groceries to those in need, while chanting “ TERA” today Guru Nanak Food Bank continues helping those in need while chatting “TERA”, we remember Guru Nanak and acknowledge the food back and everything and everyone is “TERA”

GURU NANAK KITCHEN

Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen (GNFK)was founded in late 2006 by like-minded individuals who wanted to make a positive difference to the impoverished residents of the Downtown East Side Vancouver (DTES). The organization, with the basic principle of Sikhism “Sarbhat da Bhalla” (Well-being of all) established its motto “Love All Feed All” and started serving consistently to the population of the DTES as well as others in need throughout the Lower Mainland. GNFK has since grown exponentially to be one of the fastest-growing volunteer-led organizations in Canada and was awarded charitable status in 2019. Since its inception, GNFK has provided over ONE MILLION free hot nutritious vegetarian meals. Every year, the organization has distributed hundreds of new clothing items (winter coats, socks, gloves) to the population living on the streets and in the local shelters. At annual events, thousands of new toys and school supplies are collected and distributed to the local children who live in poverty among us. Annually, we host a Valentine’s day event where over a thousand care packages containing sanitary supplies are delivered to the local shelters, baking and distributing thousands of cupcakes and cookies to the local shelters. GNFK and its volunteers strive to help while creating a positive image of our community at the same time. Supporting causes that are in the best interest of humanity, the organization continues to be a pillar of support within the communities that we live in.
